How to Use Trusted Contacts to Recover Facebook Account

We've all got a million things on our mind these days and it's not uncommon for us to become forgetful at the most inopportune moments.

One of the most frequent memory lapses many of us experience is when we're logging onto our online accounts. I don't know what it is, but remembering that password — whether it's comprised of letters, numbers, special symbols are some combination therein — can be one of the most difficult things to do.

And what happens when we put the wrong password in there multiple times? We get locked out of our account!

Facebook has created an easy way for us to regain access of our accounts when we've forgotten the password or otherwise gotten locked out. It's called the "Trusted Contacts" feature.

Here how it works: You can choose among your Facebook friends some trusted contacts that can securely send you a recovery code. This is what you'll use to get back into your account.

While the process involves you following a number of steps, your trusted contacts have some responsibility, as well. The main thing is that they must make sure that it's actually you before handing over those security codes. Once you enter the codes, you'll get access to your account.

To add a measure of security, once you choose your trusted contact(s), Facebook will notify them, so that they know what and who it's for in the case you ever need the security codes. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to pick your contacts:

1. In Facebook, go to your Security and Login Settings
2. Scroll down to where it says "Choose 3 to 5 friends to contact if you get locked out" and click "Edit."
3. Click "Choose friends" and enter the names of people you wanted as your trusted contacts.

1. Go to the login page and click Forgot account?
2. Access your profile by entering your full name, username, email or phone number and click Search. If you don't have access to any of the above, you will have to enter a new email or phone number. That's what Facebook will use to reach you. This is what that screen looks like below.

Once you enter your new email or phone number, that will take you to a page that says "Ask Your Trusted Contacts For Help." This is what it looks like below.

1. Click "Reveal My Trusted Contacts" and type the full name of one of them.
2. Each one of your contacts will give you a recovery code.
3. Use the security codes from your trusted contacts to access your account.

6. A pop-up will appear. I recommend you to read the information displayed carefully to know how you can use trusted contacts to recover a locked account which anyways I am going to cover later in this article. Now, click on Choose Trusted Contacts.

7. On the next dialog box, you can select 3 to 5 friends whom you trust. Type in the name and select when their name appear. You will have to select at least 3 friends to enable Trusted contacts.

Please be wise in choosing them. After you are done with the selection click on Confirm.

You can always change/remove these contacts and add new one's later if desired.

That's it! With this, you have activated Trusted Contacts and given yourself an added option to reset the Facebook account password. Here's how you can use them to recover Facebook account when locked out.

How to Use Facebook Trusted Contacts to Recover Account?

1. Go to the Facebook website and click on Forgotten account below the login form.

2. Enter your Full name or username which you were using on Facebook and click Search.

3. If you enter your Name then all the users with that name will be listed. You can easily figure out your account by looking at the profile picture. Click on This is my account next to your account.

4. On the next screen, you will be presented two options of Email and Phone number. Assuming that you are going for the option of Trusted Contacts to recover your account it is safe to say that you don't have either of them. So, click on No longer have access to these?

5. The next step will ask for a new phone number or Email which you would like to use. Enter the desired Email or phone number which you would like to use it from now on and confirm it. Click on Continue.

These details are important as you will get details on the Email or phone number you give above to completely recover the account. So enter them cautiously.

6. If you have forgotten the Trusted Contacts you selected then click on Reveal My Trusted Contacts.

7. When they visit the following link they will see the following message. Ask them to click on Continue.

8. On the next step, they will have to confirm that you have spoken to them about this. Select the desired option and click Continue. They will get a code on this screen. You can get that code from them.

9. Once you get all the three codes, enter them and click Continue.

10. Enter your new password and click on Continue.

You will receive an Email on the new Email id entered above with a link which can be used to complete the recovery process of the account.

Unless you planned ahead. That's exactly what Facebook trusted contacts are all about; it's a set of very close friends or family that you designate who can vouch for your identity if the otherwise unthinkable happens and you're locked out of your own account. It's a pretty interesting program because they can't suddenly turn on you and gain access to your account, as far as I can tell, nothing actually happens unless you are properly and fully locked out, at which point you invoke "trusted friends, help me!" and they're notified.

Frankly, Facebook keeps the process a bit of a mystery, likely for security reasons, but even if you never need to actually utilize it, not a bad idea to specify a few trusted contacts just in case, right? So let's see how that's done!

To start, go to Settings in Facebook, then choose "Security and Login":

Earlier this month, Access Now's Digital Security Helpline began to get reports of hacked Facebook accounts that allowed us to identify a new method for targeted " phishing ," also known as "spear phishing." Today, we're publishing details of the attack so that users are better informed and able to identify this attack.

Phishing is a method of obtaining unauthorized access to an account or service by tricking an authorized user into providing their credentials. This is usually done through mass spam messages. Spear phishing is an attack that targets a particular person and uses special messages that are more likely to appear genuine to a specific person. The new attack targets people using Facebook, and it relies on your lack of knowledge about the platform's "Trusted Contacts" feature. Trusted Contacts is a system created by Facebook to help you gain access to your account if you forget your password or your account is locked. If you enable Trusted Contacts, Facebook will ask you to identify three to five people. If you need access to your account, Facebook will send part of a code to each of these users that can be combined to gain access to your account.

Anyone who has a Facebook account could fall victim to the attack, but so far we're seeing the majority of reports from human right defenders and activists from the Middle East and North Africa.

How the attack works

Here's how the attacker attempts to exploit your trust in order to extract the information needed to steal your account:

1. You get a message from an attacker on Facebook Messenger, who is using the compromised account of someone on your Friends list.
2. The attacker asks for your help recovering their account, explaining that you are listed as one of their Trusted Contacts on Facebook, and tells you that you will receive a code for recovering their account.
3. Then the attacker triggers the "I forgot my password" feature for your Facebook account and requests a recovery code.
4. In an effort to help, you send the code you've just received to your "friend."
5. Using the code, the attacker can now steal your account from you, and use it to victimize other people.

In the cases we have observed, the attacker doesn't stop after compromising just one account. It's replicated across users' social networks. When a message comes from a "friend," people tend to trust it. That makes it an especially effective attack vector.

How to defend yourself against the attack

To help you stay safe, we encourage you to follow these recommendations:

• Treat urgent, unexpected messages with suspicion : Phishing messages often appear to come from a trusted friend. But if you get an odd message, ask yourself, are you already aware of being on a list of "Trusted Contacts" for any of your Facebook friends?
• Confirm with your friend: Try to verify your friend's identity by telephone or in person.
• Act slowly and with caution . Attacks are always evolving. In general, try to stay calm when you get a message where the sender appears to want to trigger a strong emotional reaction, like anger or fear. This might make you think you have to hurry, and it could impair your ability to evaluate the situation objectively. Don't panic . Figure out what is really happening before you take action.
• Learn how "Trusted Contacts" actually works : It doesn't work the way the phishing message in this attack suggests. We explain the details below.

What is the Trusted Contacts feature?

It's an account recovery feature in Facebook that's aimed at helping you regain access to your Facebook account and the email accounts and phone numbers linked to it.

How does the Trusted Contacts feature work?

To activate this feature, you select three to five of your Facebook friends. If you lose access to your account, these friends can generate codes from their Facebook account and forward them to you. How to Set Up Trusted Contacts to Recover Your Facebook Account

Did you ever had trouble logging into your Facebook account? Mhm. It's very frustrating when you find you can't be on Facebook for a while. May be it can extend to few days or more than a week. Yet, the fact remains true that it's for your own safety. Facebook is responsible and takes necessary precautions when your account is at a risk. Have no access to your old email? Changed the mobile number few months ago? Don't worry. Now, Facebook won't keep you waiting, even if you have no access to your specified contacts. With your dear friends around, gaining access to your account made easy.

Trusted Contacts

Facebook introduced a new account recovery option for everyone – Trusted Contacts. With Trusted Contacts feature on, you can turn 3 to 5 friends for help logging into your account.

I don't know if Facebook developer team was aware of the fact that an average person has 3 to 5 best friends.

If you can't log in to your account, then you can ask help from your trusted contacts. In this procedure, Facebook will send unique access codes to each of your trusted friends and you need to retrieve them from your friends to regain access to your Facebook account. You can learn about the whole procedure as you proceed with the steps below.

Keep in Mind

● Trusted Eligible Contacts – When you choose Facebook friends as your trusted contacts, it's not only about how much you trust them but also the ability to reach. What's the point of choosing a friend as trusted contact if you can't reach him / her out of Facebook?

● Trust Matters (Again!) – Eventhough you made the list of your trusted contacts, still you need to verify their eligibility. Unfortunately, if your trusted contacts willing to team up against you, they can take over your account very easily. Yeah, with the help of trusted contacts feature. It's best advised to turn on Facebook login notifications to notify if someone else trying to login to your account.

It seems that this feature alone can pose a threat at some point. But it depends on you and the friends you select as trusted contacts. Final word of advice is, just-use-it-wisely.

1. Log in to your Facebook account.

4. Click on Trusted Contacts setting.

5. Click Choose Trusted Contacts link.

6. Now proceed to select your trusted contacts by clicking Choose Trusted Contacts button.

7. Choose at least 3 Facebook friends by typing in their names in the given text box and click Confirm button.

8. Finally, you will be asked to enter your current Facebook password to confirm changes and set your chosen contacts as your trusted contacts.

* Once you confirm your trusted contacts, they will receive a notification claiming you have chosen them as your trusted contacts.

* You can edit or remove your trusted contacts anytime using Edit or Remove All links.

• Joining too many groups. Facebook limits users to a maximum of 200 groups, and if you go beyond that your account may be locked or disabled.
• If you posted too many messages on someone's wall or group, it may be considered spam, especially if posted within a very short time span.
• If you're under age and not part of a High School group.
• You have sent out too many friend requests to others beyond the maximum limit of 5,000, though this is rare.

How To Access a Locked Facebook Account

If you're sure your Facebook account is clear of all the above reasons, and you think it has been locked or disabled by mistake, reach out to them directly so that your concerns are adequately addressed.

You can also complete and submit an online form and Facebook will investigate the issue. However, Facebook doesn't guarantee that you'll receive a quick response within a specific time, so you may have to wait for a response from them, which could take several weeks.

If you got locked out of your Facebook account because you forgot the email address or password you used when creating your account, you can recover or reset your account provided you have some information like your email or phone number.

If you prefer to reset your account, you'll need to answer your security question that you picked when you created your account, which will prove to Facebook that you're who you say you are.

Alternatively, you can pick a friend on Facebook that you trust and give them the nominated URL and retrieve a security code. Enter this code and once you're done with any of these security checks, your account will still be visible but you'll have to wait at least 24 hours before trying to access it again.

How Tto Avoid Your Facebook Account Getting Locked Again

We've looked at some of the major reasons why your Facebook account can be locked or disabled, but sometimes it may happen without warning so you won't have control over it. Here are a few things you can do to avoid getting locked out from your account again:

• Limit the number of friend requests you send out
• Read and adhere to Facebook's terms and conditions
• Limit the number of posts you make within a short span
• If you're using Facebook for business marketing, add other social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and others to your marketing strategy, and build a fan base on them
• Don't click on links from emails that purport to be from Facebook as they may misdirect you to phishing sites and cybercriminals could easily hack your account with your credentials
• Use a reputable antivirus or security software that can nuke any malware or virus

3. You will see a list of eMail addresses that are listed on your account. If you no longer have access to these, select No longer have access to these?
4. Enter your new eMail address or phone number that you know you have access to and select Continue
5. Select Reveal My Trusted Contacts and type out the full name of one of your trusted contacts
6. You will get a set of instructions that includes a special URL. The URL contains a recovery code that only your trusted contacts can access.
7. Jump on the phone and call your friends and give them the URL so they can open the link and give the account security code to you.
8. You can now use the recovery code from this wonderful friend of yours that you so trusted to help you out in your time of need to access your account

Note: Do not text your trusted contacts, be sure to call them or talk to them in person when asking for the special security code. If your Facebook account was hacked, someone else could have access to your eMail account.
